Week Report #12

Jaden McGrath        3/7/19

This week in my animation class here at BOCES, I have moved passed the competition and have two more projects on my agenda. The first of which was a diving board animation of a character jumping off a diving board and I was lucky enough to be able to go back to good old Harmony to do it in 2-D animation. I truly did miss using it. That project is all done and turned in already. And the second project takes me back into MAYA and 3-D animation for my Independent Study Project where you can choose between eight different kinds of assignments to complete. I ended up choosing to do another 11 second club project except this time, I'm using MAYA and it will be in 3-D animation instead of 2-D with Harmony. And even then, I have already put in a good amount of work into it with my male character already finished with his mouth, body, and facial movements that honestly look ten times better than I thought. However, the female model is really starting to get on my nerves since she is very difficult to move around and her mouth movement are not working or I haven't figured out how to make it work. Hopefully I figure it all out soon. What I would like to learn next in class is to learn how to create your own nice looking or appealing character models. I honestly think that would be super awesome.

So when it comes to films releasing in theaters this year, Disney has quite the impressive slate coming up. Whether it be a movie straight from Disney or a property Disney bought, it looks like Disney will dominate the cinemas in 2019. This year Disney will release Captain Marvel (March 8th), Dumbo (March 29th), DisneyNature's Penguins (April 17th), Avengers: Endgame (April 26th), Aladdin (May 24th), Toy Story 4 (June 21st), Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5th), The Lion King (July 19th), Artemis Fowl (August 9th), Frozen II (November 22nd), and Star Wars Episode 9 (December 20th). But it looks like Disney just added one more film to their 2019 release schedule and that would be a sequel to 2014's Maleficent titled, "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil". Originally set for a May 2020 release date, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will now be set to release in theaters on October 18, 2019; a whole seven months ahead of its original May release date. Not much is known about the plot yet but it has been confirmed that a time jump has happened since the last film and will once again be focused on Maleficent and Aurora. And if I can be honest here, I don't think that making a Maleficent 2 is a very good idea. Because for one, the first movie was just ok at best and mediocre at worst. Also it kinda messed up the character of Maleficent. In the original Sleeping Beauty film, Maleficent as portrayed as a heartless villain who wants revenge for the wrong doings the kingdom bestowed on her. But in the remake, Maleficent is no longer evil and is just grumpy which isn't how the character should be. I feel like the only reason this film is even being made is because the first movie made a buttload of money and Disney just wants to make more of it. Which just seems ridiculous because alone, I think Avengers: Endgame, Star Wars Episode 9, and Frozen II will earn Disney $5 Billion on their own. I'm not saying the movie is destined to be bad, but don't judge me if I'm a little cautious going into it. But then again, Disney must have some confidence with it since they moved it up a whole 7 months so I guess we will have to see what is in store when Maleficent: Mistress of Evil comes to theaters October 18th, 2019.

  1. I think it's cool that you're going back and forth between 2D and 3D since it will develop your skills letting you have a good grasp in both. But I'm really excited for toy story and endgame, but yeah disney is gonna dominate this year.
