Week Report #13
Jaden McGrath 3/14/19
This week in my animation class here at BOCES, I am closing in in finishing my independent study project which is an 11 second club project but in 3-D animation in MAYA. I have finished all of the body movements, lip sync, set design, and camera positions. All that is left for me to do is the rendering of those cameras before I put everything in premiere. But what's been really getting on my nerves is the render part. Because no matter what I do, whenever I render one of the cameras, the female model's eyes keep disappearing or her mouth stops working. And the more and more it fails, the more and more angry I become. The male model looks great and is rendering properly but the female one just keeps getting messed up and I'm close to my breaking point. So I guess if there is something I want to learn next, it would have to be how to fix the rendering for the female 3-D model before I have a mental breakdown.

Ok guys, get ready because we have a few topics to talk about here so bare with me. Earlier this week, we received our first reactions to the newest edition to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) or Worlds of DC as they are now calling it, Shazam!. Shazam marks the seventh entry in DC's cinematic universe following Man of Steel (2013), Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), Wonder Woman (2017), Justice League (2017), and just recently Aquaman (2018). When it comes to the film itself, I found myself being both excited and a little bit nervous. I'm excited because I think Zachary Levi was the perfect choice to play the character and the film genuinely looks fun and enthralling. But why I am nervous is because the film is being directed by David F. Sandberg who directed films like Lights Out (2016) and Annablle: Creation (2017). Now don't get me wrong, I think those movies are really really good, its just that I was nervous about a director who works on horror films was now making not only a superhero movie, but a movie on Shazam who needs to be goofy, childish, and down right hilarious to nail on screen. But my worries were all wiped away when I heard early reactions say that Shazam! is a funny and delightful film. With some people saying, "Finally allowed to say that #Shazam was fantastic! Full of heart and pure childhood wish fulfillment. It's funny and the tone is exactly right. @zacharylevi is perfect in the role, and so is @asherangel, who I'm convinced is @maisie_williams' brother!", "#Shazam is an absolute delight! Super vibrant, tons of heart & a great fun-loving vibe. The family element is a big charmer & so is the humor that comes with watching @ZacharyLevi explore his new powers. Said this after IT but it's worth repeating - @Jgrazerofficial is a star.", and "#Shazam is parts Home Alone, parts Big, a crowd pleasing family-friendly joy-filled wish-fulfillment superhero film which gets a bit over the top and cheesy at times. It’s fun and funny, and I was surprised at how much it wears it’s heart on its sleeve.". Hearing news like that makes me so relieved and makes me think that as much as DC stumbled in the beginning, films like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and now Shazam! show that they are now starting to get a hang on these movies. I am now honestly even more excited to see the film when it releases on April 5th.
But it turns out I might not even have to wait that long because Shazam! is actually holding early screenings two weeks early just like Bumblebee did in December. On March 23rd, select theaters will provide an exclusive sneak preview showing of the film two weeks before its worldwide release date. And luckily for me, one of those theaters is right near me so next Saturday, I might get a chance to see the film earlier than most people. I really hope I can go to one of those showtimes because getting the chance to see Shazam! early would make me so happy and excited. Plus it works out for me because that way I could go see Pet Semetary and not have to choose whether to see that or Shazam! that weekend. So if I get the opportunity to go to one of those screenings, you bet that I won't hesitate to do so. Especially with the positive reactions mentioned before.
And it's not just Shazam! that is getting positive early reviews. The same can apply to Disney's first of four live-action remakes of the year, Tim Burton's Dumbo. Another film I was both excited for and worried about like Shazam!. In fact, I was more worried about this one because Tim Burton is directing the film and his track record lately leaves much to be desired. Especially after the horrible trainwreck his remake of Frankenweenie was. And that the writer of the film is Ehrin Kruger who wrote the screenplays for Scream 3 (2000), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), and Ghost in the Shell (2017). And lets be honest, a majority of those films are absolute garbage. But early reports that Dumbo (2019) is a enjoyable, fun, but also thin film. Some people have come out and said, "I really enjoyed #Dumbo . It’s a beautiful and whimsical movie, starring a CGI elephant with so much heart. It’s also a rather simple tale, so don’t expect tons of character septh. But I still had a blast with the ride it took me on and it’s the best Burton’s been in years.", "#Dumbo has a blessedly surprising pro-animal rights agenda wrapped in a subtle, rebellious meta-commentary on a band of outsiders shaking up a corporate establishment. Its aesthetic design is dazzling, gorgeous & meticulous. The CG elephant is absolutely adorable.", and "I wasn't sure what to expect, but I can say that #Dumbo is a genuinely heartwarming, entertaining movie that is definitely worth your time. The cast is enjoyable but the VFX Dumbo is so damn expressive that he steals the show every time he's onscreen." I looks like in the coming weeks, we are now guarenteed two really good movies; Shazam! and Dumbo.
