Week Report #15
Jaden McGrath 4/11/19
This week in my animation class here at BOCES, I continue to work on my final project in MAYA. Originally I thought I was completely done with the project, but I realized that it needed to be at 45 seconds long and mine was about 30 seconds. So I have decided to add a little addition to it to make the project longer in length. I don't want to say what it is just in case I spoil it, but all I will say is that it gets a little strange. So far, the work on the addition has been going pretty smoothly, although I do believe I have found my Achille's heel when it comes to MAYA. And that would be walking. I mean I can make a character run and jump, but for some reason, making them walk is proving difficult for me. Most of the time it looks like the character is ice skating on the grass rather than just walking normally. It is something that I truly hope I can fix. As for what I want to learn next, it has not changed and is still me wanting to learn how to make my own character model in MAYA. I think that would be awesome to be able to do.

So it should be noted that I do quite enjoy the character of Hellboy. I would have to say that my first introduction to the character was the 2004 Guillermo Del Toro film starring Ron Perlman and its 2007 sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. And in 2017, my love for Hellboy returned when he appeared as a special guest fighter in the hit video game, Injustice 2. So when I heard word that a Hellboy reboot was on the way, I got really excited to see this brand new take on both the character and the source material. And I was even excited to hear that David Harbour of Stranger Things fame would be taking over for Ron Perlman as the titular character of Hellboy. Especially when I saw the first official photos of Harbour in the make up. He looked so close to the character which only boosted my excitement along with the announcement of its R rating where the original two films were both PG-13 and could've really benefitted from the R-Rating. But to be honest, my excitement was kind of lowered when I saw the very first trailer for the film. It just looked underwhelming and kind of bland which is not what I wanted the film to be at all. But the came the red band trailer which brought me completely back on board with gory and intense action and violence and scenes that look like it was ripped right out of the comics the film was based on. So once I saw that, I became even more excited to see the film hoping it would be just as awesome as the red band trailer made it look. But apparently, the overall film has more in common with the first trailer than it does with its red band one. Reviews have come out just one day before the films release and it turns out that the film is a complete disaster, only sporting a 13% on rotten tomatoes. People have claimed that although David Harbour does a fantastic job as the character, the film itself is just a generic, bland, and boring reboot with awful CGI. As someone who was really looking forward to the film, it really does break my heart to hear this news. Although I still will be seeing it, I will now be entering the film with caution, not sure what I will be getting.

A walk cycle in 3D is not an easy task.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of the Hellboy comics and have been recc'd them many times! Perhaps dip into them instead of the movie? Good luck with your animation!!
