Week Report #16

Jaden McGrath           5/3/19

This week in my animation class here at BOCES, I have just wrapped up animating and rendering the second half of my final project. I mean there is always the opportunity to go back and fix something before the due date, but for now, both halves of the project are finished. Now all that's left to do is to add in the sound effects on the second half into premiere and go back to part one and make a few more altercations. Other than the two blogs that I must also complete for the project, I am pretty darn close to finishing the whole assignment. For the most part, animating the second half was fun with the exception of just one thing. For some odd reason, sometimes Maya would like to pull a joke on me and change scenes that I have previously finished whenever I went back to fix something from a previous moment. And even if I set a series of keyed frames in the scene, it will somehow be messed up if I go back to fix anything. For example, i had just finished the part at the very end but felt like I wanted to make the characters arms move when he walked in a previous scene. So when I went back and added that in, I went back to look at the ending and saw that the arms were now in the wrong place. It took me at least half an hour to fix the problem so yeah, that really frustrated me. Also I may also sound like a broken record at this point, but I still would really like to learn how to make my own character model in Maya.

So earlier this week, we got our first look at the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film with its first official trailer hitting the internet practically out of nowhere. And just as I feared, it looks like a generic, bland, unfunny mess. Almost like Paramount was trying to make a Hop 2 and decided at the last minute to make it a Sonic movie instead. Even down to hiring James Marsden who was also the star of Hop. The only thing that actually looked good was Jim Carry playing the role of famous Sonic villain, Dr. Robotnik. He looks like he is actually having fun with this role, which is good because it has been way too long since we have seen Jim Carrey be his old hilarious self again after all the dramas he has been doing lately. If this trailer is correct, then Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik could be just as enjoyably crazy as his performances as Ace Ventura and the Mask. But back on to Sonic, with all the concerning things this trailer presents, there is only one thing that fans and audiences have specifically pointed out as a major misstep for the film. And that would be the design of Sonic himself. Many people have posted their criticisms with the design saying that he should have had while gloves instead of white hands and should have one long eye with two pupils like the original design instead of two eyes. But it seems like Paramount has listened to those fans as now the studio is going back and altering the design of the blue hedgehog. But here's the thing, I may have an unpopular opinion, but... I don't mind the design at all. Because let's be honest, if he does end up getting the one long eye with the two pupils, it is going to look just as creepy as the current Sonic does now. Even though he doesn't look all that creepy. But Paramount is redesigning the character so we will just have to see how he will officially look when the Sonic the Hedgehog movie hits theaters on November 8th, 2019.
